Black out.

There are few times in my life when I am legitimately in pain or afraid for my life. There was that Christmas night in 2011 when I became aware that I was allergic to crab through an almost deadly anaphylactic reaction, the time I had second degree burns peeling and bubbling the flesh from my thighs after an unfortunate incident with Starbucks tea, and when I had a cheap ring jammed to the bone when climbing a fence as a kid. Then there was today.

Year 33: Darkness ends, art revives

Year 33

Several months ago when I was at my previous job at the magazine, I connected with Kathryn, a key player and piece of the team of directors and producers of Year 33 to do a piece on the feature length documentary. A co-founder and producer for Sueno Documentary Films alongside Co-founder Janna Watkins, both on the Selection Committee of the Cambodia Town Film Festival, we have managed to stay in touch from LA to Phnom Penh and with building excitement, share our projects. Without further adieu:

Year 33 that is now coming into existence through Kickstarter!

Following the lives of three young Khmer artists Narim, Vanny, and Viet- all with varied skills and talents- the Year 33 team produced a film that captures what the Khmer Rouge were unable to take away from this generation: art, stories, and the passion for creation.

So This is the New Year. Written January 19th, 2013.

I sit here in an extremely air conditioned room, filled with deep dark cherry wood, Egyptian cotton bedding, the sounds of garden parties filtering through the window, the faint smell of coconut rolls and green apples in the air. The soft lights illuminate my surroundings perfectly and Jesse Morrow croons from my laptop as I type. I write from Le Meridien Hotel in Siem Reap, a delightful and unexpected getaway mixed with some business and a lot of leisure.
