Yesterday I excitedly got to watch Scotland and the Forte Cambodia 5s complete in the Phnom Penh World Cup at 3g Mini Stadium. In sweltering 100+ heat and humidity as I stood cheering on the sidelines and felt trickles of sweat river down my thighs and pool into the back of my kneecaps I thought, “Isn’t it supposed to be rainy season?” This was right before I began to get lightheaded, seeing spots and stars dart behind my eyelids, and in a slight daze made my way back home for a couple bottles of water to rehydrate, a soggy workout, and a blowdry at The Dollhouse.
I’ve never been very shy in front of the camera, as this series of photos obviously state. I’ve always looked up to women who are comfortable with their bodies, whatever shape or size, and remember being amazed at the beaches in France where the women would swan about topless or in thong bikinis- not giving a thought to nudity or how they might be perceived. I felt like a little Amish girl wearing my Roxy tank top and jean shorts as they floated in the ocean, bodies bared, nothing hidden. I was only 12, but I felt the freeness they experienced that came with letting it all out once in a while!
As Khmer New Year and its glorious five day weekend rolled around, I was constantly asking and being asked “where will you be for the holiday?” Answers ranged from Taiwan to Edinburgh to Cyprus to various provinces or islands of Cambodia but my answer was a content and pleased, “I’m staying in town.”
